Matkahuolto's travel cards are renewed - Change your travel card
New travel cards were introduced in 2020 and in 2021 all former cards are replaced with new ones. At the same time, the ticket products to be stored on the card will change, as the old city and regional tickets will be replaced by new ones. Travel cards will be replaced one area and ticket product at a time. When the validity of the ticket product being phased out ends, the old travel card will not be topped up. Instead, it will be changed for a new one.
If you still have an old travel card you need to change it to new one. After 31th of July 2021 travelling with your old travel card is no longer possible and your travel card is no longer a valid payment on 1st of August. At the end of this page you can see how the change proceeds regionally.
The existing travel cards will be replaced by cards containing new technology, because was are adopting a new, identifier-based payment and ticketing system, which is also required by the authorities. In future the new system and new travel cards will enable a range of new services, such as topping-up online.
Replacing the travel card
When the validity of the ticket product stored on the old travel card is about to expire, use up the old card during the ticket’s period of validity. After that
Come to a Matkahuolto terminal to have your ticket and travel card replaced. A travel card charge of EUR 6.50 applies if your existing travel card is older than 9 months.
Or you can order a new ticket and travel card at https://kauppa.matkahuolto.fi. A travel card charge of EUR 6.50 applies to orders placed in the online store, but you will not be charged any dispatch or handling fees.
Please note that you cannot top up your old travel card after the ticket has expired.
Using the travel card
The new travel cards work the same way as the old ones
Use the travel card to pay the fare by presenting the card to the onboard card reader. If you need assistance, the driver will help you.
You can top up you travel card at Matkahuolto terminals, agent outlets, on most buses and coaches, at all R kiosks or by using Matkahuolto’s Bus Tickets application if you have a phone with a NFC feature.
Travel card replacement schedule by municipality
Check the replacement schedule for your municipality in the table. The municipalities are listed alphabetically. Nationwide ticket products, such as the 44-trip annual tickets change on July 2021. If you cannot find your municipality or ticket product in the table, no replacement schedule has yet been determined for it and you can continue using your travel card and ticket product for the time being.
