Ridge views, national landscapes and roaring rapids – three nearby autumn getaways

Enjoy autumn break closer than you think
Crisp autumn air and vibrant colors make the perfect backdrop for your fall getaway. You don’t always have to go far – an unexpected destination might just be one bus ride away.
From Helsinki to Liesjärvi – straight into the forest
Liesjärvi National Park is surprisingly close to Helsinki. Hop on a long-distance bus at Kamppi and get off at Kyynärä stop. After about 1.5 hours on the bus and a short walk, you’ll find yourself at Kyynäränharju – a scenic forest ridge between two lakes.
From Kyynärä stop, it’s about a 1.5 km walk to Kyynäränharju and about 4 km to Korteniemi Heritage Farm. Buses along Highway 2 run daily, so a trip is easy even in autumn.
From Joensuu to Koli – embrace Finland’s national landscape
Getting from Joensuu to Koli takes about an hour. At the destination, you’ll be greeted by the iconic Ukko-Koli views across Lake Pielinen and the peaceful beauty of autumn nature. Koli is ideal for a weekend getaway when you need some quiet and space to breathe.
On weekdays, pre-booked bus connections are available. You’ll need to buy your ticket by 6 PM the day before. A transfer is required, but don’t worry – the bus companies coordinate the connection, so the second bus will be waiting.
From Rovaniemi to Vikaköngäs – by the rapids
A stunning nature spot is just a short bus ride from Rovaniemi city center. Vikaköngäs, located in the arctic circle hiking area, features the roaring Raudanjoki rapids surrounded by autumn forest. A suspension bridge crosses the river, offering spectacular views.
Vikaköngäs has several hiking trails and campfire sites, so pack some snacks and a warm drink. Take a northbound intercity bus from Rovaniemi and check the same-day return schedules in advance.
The best part about local travel is its simplicity – no time wasted on long transfers and always great public transport options. Your next unforgettable trip could be closer than you think.
