Matkahuolto chosen as Finland’s most sustainable Parcels & Logistics brand

16.3.2021

In the 2021 Sustainable Brand Index™ survey, Finnish consumers chose Matkahuolto as the most sustainable Parcels & Logistics brand in Finland. The survey is based on consumer perceptions and assessments of brand sustainability.

“It is great that Finns see Matkahuolto as the most sustainable Parcels & Logistics brand. Sustainability is at the heart of our operations. For 90 years, one of our differentiators has been the combination of passenger and parcel services on buses. We are grateful for this valuable recognition and will continue to work on our development projects related to the environment, employee well-being and other sustainability issues,” commented CEO Janne Jakola.

In 2021, the survey included 212 brands from 25 industries in Finland. It was the first time that the Parcels & Logistics category was included in the survey in Finland.

“The Parcels & Logistics category was added because it is very relevant from a sustainability perspective in general and also because of the ongoing pandemic and the growth of e-commerce. Matkahuolto entered the Sustainable Brand Index with a bang, beating other strong brands in its industry, such as Posti. It is clear that Finns value Matkahuolto’s efficient and responsible business model,” says Erik Elvingsson Hedén, founder of the Sustainable Brand Index.

The other brands in the Parcels & Logistics category won by Matkahuolto included Bring, DB Schenker, DHL, Posti and PostNord. The choice of brands to be evaluated is influenced by their market presence, market share, turnover and brand awareness. Matkahuolto ranked 58th among all brands evaluated.

New sustainability programme published

In 2020, Matkahuolto conducted a materiality analysis in cooperation with stakeholders to build a sustainability programme. Matkahuolto’s first comprehensive sustainability programme was completed in January 2021. The programme is made up of four sustainability themes:

  • We look after our employees

  • We are an attractive partner and service provider

  • We generate positive environmental impacts

  • Our activities benefit society

“Sustainability is seen as an important part of our culture, something we do every day. At the heart of our sustainability programme are partnerships that help us make a wider impact on the environment and society,” says Viivi Savelius, Sustainability Manager.

You can read more about the sustainability programme on our newly launched website. We will also publish the first Sustainability Report during March 2021.

About the Sustainable Brand Index survey

The Sustainable Brand Index, Europe’s largest brand survey focusing on sustainability, explores how consumers perceive brand sustainability and why. In 2021, more than 60,000 consumers, of whom 9,900 were from Finland, participated in the interviews conducted in the Nordic countries, the Baltic region and the Netherlands. Each brand was evaluated by at least a thousand consumers.

“The purpose of the Sustainable Brand Index is to drive the agenda, visualise the value of a sustainable brand and raise awareness of sustainability as part of branding and communication,” says Erik Elvingsson Hedén, founder of the Sustainable Brand Index.

The Sustainable Brand Index survey is based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and takes into account social and environmental sustainability. Interviews were conducted with consumers aged 16-75 between November 2020 and January 2021. The survey has been conducted in Finland every year since 2013 by the Swedish SB Insight Ab.
