Matkahuolto’s Annual Report 2024 has been published – includes emission calculation results
Matkahuolto’s Annual Report 2024 has been published. The report consists of three parts: the annual review, the Board of Directors’ report and financial statements, and the sustainability information.
The annual review includes the CEO’s summary of 2024, highlights and key figures of the year. Additionally, the review presents the development of business operations and the entire company through the key themes of the strategy, as well as the progress of our brand, personnel, and responsibility efforts during the period from January 1 to December 31, 2024.
The sustainability information now replaces GRI-standard-based reporting and follows the structure and general principles of the European sustainability reporting standards. The reporting does not yet meet all requirements for sustainability reporting, but the development work provides the foundation for future statutory sustainability reporting.
In 2024, we continued the implementation of our strategy as planned in a challenging operating environment with increasing competition. We achieved significant successes in each of our strategy’s four key themes, guiding us toward our strategic goals.
Our annual emission calculation is completed – parcel-specific emissions reduced by approximately 10%
The emission calculation covering Matkahuolto’s entire company and domestic parcel services for 2024 has also been completed. Our total emissions were 9,700 tCO2e in 2024. Emissions decreased by 6% compared to 2023.
The greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations, i.e., scope 1 and scope 2, decreased by 45% from 2023. The share of our own operations in the total emissions is approximately 5%, and these emissions cover the company’s own vehicles and purchased energy. The reduction in emissions is a result of decreased fuel consumption and an increase in the share of zero-emission energy in the total energy consumption.
The value chain, or scope 3, accounts for approximately 95% of our total emissions. Of these value chain emissions, 60% originate from parcel transport and 27% from purchased goods and services. Compared to the previous year, 2023, our parcel-specific emissions have decreased by approximately 10%.
During 2024, we transitioned more linehaul transport to renewable diesel. The share of renewable and electric energy sources in transport was 41% in 2024.
